Update 14:41 UTC : On the Gwadar coastline, the quake created a small island about half a mile into the sea near an area called ‘Jhanda’, according to Express News. The newly appearing island is said to have a mountainous terrain rising up to a hundred feet. A large crowd was seen gathering at the site to see the new island. This information has been given by normally well informed press sources however ER finds it hard to believe and looks for further confirmation.

Update 20:32 UTC : The army dispatched 300 soldiers, rescue and medical teams and a helicopter to the worst-hit areas. Chief Minister Abdul Malik said an emergency had been declared in Awaran, seven to eight hours’ drive from Quetta, the provincial capital.

Update 16:26 UTC : The well informed Indian news-site Outlook India writes : Forty people were killed and dozens injured when a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Pakistan today, with officials saying casualties could increase near the epicentre in a remote area in Balochistan.
Forty deaths were reported from quake-hit areas of Awaran district, chief military spokesman Maj Gen Asim Bajwa said in a message posted on Twitter. Other officials were quoted by news channels as saying that dozens were injured when mud-brick houses collapsed in Awaran and Khuzdar areas of Balochistan province. Six bodies were found in Awaran bazar and four more recovered in far flung villages of the district, said Deputy Commissioner Abdul Rasheed Baloch. “I fear more people are trapped inside collapsed houses,” he said.
Ghulam Baloch, a local administration official from Khuzdar, said, “Houses and shops have collapsed and the casualties could increase. An emergency has been declared in Awaran and some other parts of Balochistan.

Earthquake creates new island off Gwadar coastline

New Delhi: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 45 people in Balochistan, besides creating a new island off the Gwadar coastline in its wake, Express News reported.

Tremors were felt as far as the Indian capital New Delhi.

The quake struck at 4:29 pm local time (1129 GMT) around 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the city of Khuzdar in Balochistan province, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.7, recording its duration as eight seconds.

On the Gwadar coastline, the quake created a small island about half a mile into the sea near an area called ‘Jhanda’, according to Express News.

The newly appearing island is said to have a mountainous terrain rising up to a hundred feet. A large crowd was seen gathering at the site to see the new island.

The area of the epicentre is sparsely populated, but the USGS issued a red alert for the quake, which left aftershocks of up to 5.9 magnitude, according to the meteorological department.

A senior Pakistani meteorologist, Muhammad Riaz, told Dunya TV station it was a “major” earthquake and “heavy destruction” was likely.

Minor tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, while office workers in the city of Ahmedabad near the border with Pakistan ran out of buildings and into the street.

Mumtaz Baluch, senior local administration official in Awaran district, 350 kilometres southwest of Quetta, told AFP: “There are reports of houses being collapsed in the district due to earthquake.”

“We have dispatched our teams to the affected area to ascertain the losses.”

In April a 7.8-magnitude quake centred in southeast Iran, close to the border with Baluchistan, killed 41 people and affected more than 12,000 on the Pakistan side of the border.

People working in offices Karachi rushed out of their building and sat on the footpaths along the roads or stood away from the buildings.

“My work table jerked a bit and again and I impulsively rushed outside,” Noor Jabeen, a 28-year woman working for an insurance company said while breathing heavily.

“It was not so intense but it was terrible,” said Owais Khan, who works for a provincial government office.

“Whenever I feel jolts it reminds me of the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir,” said Amjad Ali, 45, IT official standing on the road said.

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 208 people in Pakistan's remote south-west province of Balochistan.

The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on Tuesday afternoon at a depth of 20km (13 miles) north-east of Awaran, the US Geological Survey said.

Many houses were flattened and thousands of people have spent the night in the open.

After the quake, a small island appeared off the coast near the port of Gwadar, witnesses reported.

People gathered on the beach to see the new island, which is about 9m (30ft) high and 100m long, Gwadar Police Chief Pervez Umrani said.

Balochistan is Pakistan's largest but least populated province.

The region is prone to earthquakes, with at least 35 people killed in a 7.8-magnitude tremor that was centred in south-eastern Iran in April.

Mud houses
The latest quake was so powerful it was felt as far away as Karachi, Hyderabad, and India's capital, Delhi.

Balochistan government spokesman Jan Buledi put the death toll at 208 and warned it could rise. At least 340 people have been injured.

"We are seriously lacking medical facilities and there is no space to treat injured people in the local hospitals," Mr Buledi said.

He said helicopters were airlifting the most seriously injured to Karachi while others were being cared for in neighbouring districts.

Awaran local government official Abdul Rasheed Baluch said around 90% of houses in the district had been destroyed.

Many of the casualties are said to be from Labach, on the northern outskirts of Awaran town.

People in the region mostly live in mud houses as opposed to multi-storey concrete structures, says the BBC's Shahzeb Jillani.

The few concrete buildings in the area mostly house government offices, he adds.

An emergency has been declared in the earthquake-affected districts of Awaran and Chagai.

Provincial disaster management officials say tents and medical supplies have been sent from Quetta and neighbouring district headquarters.

More than 200 soldiers have also been despatched for rescue efforts.

Tuesday's major earthquake in southern Pakistan led to some intriguing reports of a new island appearing just off Pakistan's coast.

The Associated Press says following Tuesday's 7.7-magnitude tremor, witnesses reported that a small island appeared near the Arabian Sea port of Gwadar, about 150 miles northeast of the quake's epicenter.

Gwadar Police Chief Pervez Umrani said the new island was about 30 feet high and 100 feet long.

Weather.com reached out to experts for their opinion on the plausibility of the extraordinary claim, including Dr. Rob Mellors, a researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. Mellors specializes in seismology in Central Asia and the Middle East, and he says the region has seen these instant islands in past.

"In 1945 there was a big earthquake, an 8 [magnitude], offshore, that created islands that lasted three months," Mellors told Weather.com.

We also asked Mellors why the sudden appearance of an island wouldn't trigger a tsunami. He explains what happened off the coast of Pakistan could have been a "large scale mud liquefaction, or possibly what's known as a mud volcano, which is driven by methane."

Bill Barnhart, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., explained that a mud volcano is "caused by a release of gases that are trapped deeper down in the ground. As seismic waves pass by, these are released and form mud volcanoes at the surface."

"The gases become mobile, and they entrain mud with them as they come to the surface," Barnhart added.

The experts explain if enough mud is lifted from the ocean floor, an island forms, which wouldn't necessarily cause a tsunami.

"This is probably a very localized uplift of mud," Mellors said. "Tsunamis are usually caused by a broader uplift. A tsunami is when you have tens or hundreds of kilometers of sea floor moving up. In this case you only have that small area lifting up."

"One of these formed in this region in 2001 due to an earthquake in India," Barnhart said. Mellors added that other similar islands were spotted in 1945 and 1999.

Barnhart noted that these islands don't last long.

"Typically, since these are basically mud piles on the ocean floor, they will completely erode away within about a year."

Update 06:32 UTC on September 25 : The death toll has further increased to 283 people. 400 are being reported as injured. The number will probably increase further today as SAR (Search and Rescue) teams are searching the rubble. No word so far of people who are missing (probably also hundreds). Army units have been dispatched to the epicenter area. The weather in the area is good which implicates a smooth relief assistance. We have noticed many powerful aftershocks which make rescue efforts very dangerous as many houses are on the brink of collapse.
The earthquake has affected 6 districts in Baluchistan.
600 army soldiers are currently helping in the rescue and relief efforts.
The seriously injured people are helicopter rescued to hospitals in Karachi.

Update 12:27 UTC : Some more information about the new Gwadar island who was shaped during the shaking of the earthquake. The new island is probably a “mud volcano”, pushed upwards by methane gas during the violent shaking of the earthquake. Historic facts are mentioning a same island forming after a 1945 earthquake. Scientists are surprised that such activity occurred more than 400 kilometers from the epicenter. The island is not a normal island but a huge amount of mud that will be eroded by waves and weather and will again disappear in the ocean like it also did in 1945

อาจจะทุกอย่างที่ว่ามาก็ใด้ครับ(เดาเอา)โน่นนิดนี่หน่อย
ความผิดพลาดโน่นนี่นั่น เอามาวิเคราะห์รวมๆกันก็จะกลายเป็นค่าบวกลบ อย่างที่ข้างบน
ของ USGS ลง uncertianty ใว้ทั้งค่า magnification และค่า depth อาจเพราะเงื่อนไขของการออกแบบ ต้นทุน ฯลฯ
(ผมคิดว่าคงไม่มีเครื่องมืออะไรในโลกเรา ที่ใช้วัดแล้วจะไม่มี uncertaintyนะ ^^)
ส่วนการสอบเทียบผมไม่แน่ใจว่าเขามีหรือไม่ เงื่อนไขการใช้งานมันก็อาจประมาณว่าถูกปล่อยลืม
ซะเป็นส่วนใหญ่ โดนร้อนโดนเย็น โดนน้ำโดนลม โน่นนี่นั่น อันนี้ทุ่นตรวจจับ น่าจะต้องเจอครับ ... เดาเอาครับ ...
